Props & Make-Up

Our film, being a pre apocalyptic zombie film naturally required several props. While some of the most obvious would include blood and makeup, there are several others that will be needed in order to make the film a success.

The opening sequence will feature a romantically involved couple. As the film is a horror, it is imperative that the couple wear white t shirts in order to signify their purity from the evil that is to manifest. I took the inspiration to have these characters wearing white from the original Dracula film with Christopher Lee. A woman appeared in the opening scenes wearing a white dress and it was clear to the viewer that this woman was innocent, and perhaps even in danger.
The female character in our film will also wear a red unbuttoned shirt over her white top, to signify the danger of her actions. This girl represents danger, and it must come across that her words and actions will have more of an impact than the male in the scene, who will wear a white long sleeved top, with a black hoodie around his waist. He is pure and innocent and will wear no danger colours at this time.

As the couple sit down they will discuss events in the news. Originally for this sequence we planned the use of a newspaper but decided to instead push boundaries by using a Smartphone that is able to access the wider media. We decided that this would be the best course of action as the couple are only teenagers and will have knowledge of modern technology as it has grown with them.

The action will then cut to a new sequence of a corpse in the woodland being eaten by a zombie. Props used here will include fake blood, made from golden syrup, red food dye and corn flour, and a white make up kit. Furthermore, the zombie will wear typical gothic 90’s clothes with a hoodie that ironically says DEAD. After our initial practice run at filming a zombie film we concluded that less is more in relation to the zombie make up.

The corpse will also feature a butchered white t shirt stained in blood, and will have his torso wrapped in cling film so none of the blood goes onto his skin. The cling film will not appear on camera and is being used simply for clean up purposes.

The scene then cuts back to the couple, who will now stand upon hearing noises in the distant woodland. Here, the girl will take the lead while the male will stay behind to put on his black hoodie. This prop is being used to delay the male from entering the woodland at the same time as the girl. The colour black was chosen here to signify darkness.
